More than 700 attendees gathered in April 2024 for the 54th Annual Meeting, held in Toronto, Ontario. Program Chair Daniel O’Quinn organized a reading of Zong! by the acclaimed poet M. NourbeSe Philip, an event graciously supported by Carleton University, the University of Guelph, the University of Ottawa, the University of Toronto, the University of Waterloo, and York University. For the second year in a frow, the popular “Eighteenth-Century Café” sessions offered informal chats on issues of interest to members, including “In the Time of Cuts: Strategies for the Future,” made possible by the generous sponsorship of the Lewis Walpole Library. Two packed receptions offered attendees a chance to catch up and relax at the end of the day: the Executive Board’s hosted Membership Reception; and the Affiliate and Caucus Reception, hosted by Elizabeth Mell in honor of her father, Donald C. Mell, Jr. Kirsten Silva Gruesz (University of California Santa Cruz) spoke on “California Before America: Tilting the Eighteenth Century toward the Pacific” for the annual Clifford Lecture. The Presidential Address, “Annotations on the Representation of Race: Performing Edward Young’s The Revenge Then and Now,” was held by Lisa A. Freeman (University of Illinois, Chicago). The 55th Annual Meeting will be held virtually over 2 weekends, March 28-29 and April 4- 5, 2025. Highlights include Marisa Fuentes (Rutgers University) as this year’s Clifford Lecturer, the 50th Anniversary of the Women’s Caucus, mentoring sessions with “The Dr. is In,” and a trivia night!

Congrès/Congresses :

Volume 57 of ASECS’s quarterly journal Eighteenth-Century Studies—edited by Ramesh Mallipeddi (University of British Columbia), Managing Editor Oliver Bedard (University of British Columbia), and book review editor Kathleen Lubey (St. John’s University)—contained 14 articles, 2 roundtables (with 14 contributions), and 53 reviews. The summer issue featured a special section on the poet Christopher Smart, guest edited by Fraser Easton and Ian Balfour; the roundtable included a previously unpublished essay (“Trauma and Literature: The Case of Christopher Smart”) by the late Geoffrey Hartman, with a headnote but Kevis Goodman. Looking forward, Volume 58.1 (guest edited by David Alff and Jo Guldi) will focus on the theme of “Infrastructure,” and Alex Dick and Eric Gidal will guest edit Volume 59.1 with the theme of “Coasts.” Studies in Eighteenth-Century Culture, Vol. 53, was the final volume overseen by David Brewer (Ohio State University), editor, and Crystal Lake (Wright State University), associate editor. It contained 22 essays and included scholars working in literary studies, book history, theater, the history of art, the history of science, the history of dress, political theory, the history of magic, musicology, and the study of political culture. The materials under investigation stem from Japan, the United States, Venice, Saxony, Austrian-occupied Milan, Great Britain, France, and their respective colonies in the Caribbean. George Boulukos (Southern Illinois University, Carbondale) is the new editor of SECC, and will see the remainder of Vol. 54 through the production process. Highlights include Wendy Wassyng Roworth’s Presidential Address on Angelica Kaufmann, the 2023 Clifford Lecturer Sanjay Subrahmanyam (UCLA) on I’tisam ud-Din, and the winning 2023 Catharine Macaulay Graduate Student Essay by Fauve Vandenberghe (Ghent University).

Both journals are available online via JHUP’s Project MUSE.

The quarterly ASECS News Circular enjoys a new format; photos from the recent Annual Meeting and advertisements from relevant partners make it an interactive publication.

Collaborations :
ASECS and the African Studies Association have been awarded a joint American Council for Learned Society-Intention Foundry Society Engagement Funding Initiative on “Africa in the Eighteenth-Century.” Ten graduate students from each society will participate in a year-long publishing workshop aimed at supporting emerging scholars’ first article publication. The IF Funding Initiative works to support projects that name and intervene in the various kinds of precarity experienced by early career scholars from groups who have been systemically excluded, marginalized, or neglected in their fields and disciplines.

The activities of ANZSECS continue to revolve around our major conference, the David Nichol Smith Seminar. As noted in the 2021 report, the 2017 conference produced a volume of selected papers: “Spaces of Enlightenment: From Domestic Scenes to Global Visions,” edited by Peter Denney and Lisa O'Connell, papers from the Sixteenth David Nichol Smith Seminar, Eighteenth-Century Life (September 2021) vol. 45, no. 3. https://read.dukeupress.edu/eighteenth-century-life/article/45/3/1/174268/Spaces-of-Enlightenment-From-Domestic-Scenes-to A second edited publication, focussing on art, garden, and architectural history, also emerged from the 2017 conference: Making Ideas Visible in the Eighteenth Century, edited by Jennifer Milam and Nicola Parsons (University of Delaware Press, 2022). https://udpress.udel.edu/book-title/making-ideas-visible/ Another special number of Eighteenth-Century Life, containing papers from the 2020 conference ‘Dark Enlightenments’, is under way.

Congrès/Congresses :
The 18th David Nichol Smith Seminar was held from 7-9 December 2022 at Australian Catholic University (ACU) in Melbourne.  It was convened by Professor Kate Fullagar, Dr Killian Quigley and Dr Kristie Flannery.  The theme for the conference was ‘Marine Worlds of the Long Eighteenth Century.’ It was the first eighteenth-century event in the region to address the “blue humanities.”
The focus is especially on exploring experiences, knowledges and spaces of the sea and the undersea, 1650-1850. We will be open to work on any marine world, though perhaps will emphasise Global South subjects. We are most keen to highlight and interrogate how the 'blue humanities,' and environmental humanities in general, are reshaping the study of eighteenth-century worlds across disciplines. For more details see ANZSECS annual report.
The conference was blessed with superb keynote lectures from Prof Sasha Handley (Manchester), Prof Kate Fullagar (Australian Catholic University), Assoc Prof Eugenia Zuroski (McMaster) and the winner of the DNS2020 ECR Keynote competition, Dr Freya Gowrely (Bristol).
--
As part of the 18th David Nichol Smith Seminar, a public lecture was hosted by the Australian Catholic University, featuring a presentation by Professor Lynette Smith (Monash) on ‘Global Encounters and Marine Worlds.’

Congrès/Congresses :
A highlight of this year’s event program was the Tag des 18. Jahrhunderts on November 25, 2022, in Vienna. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the OGE18, this convention was dedicated to the Enlightenment in public and popular culture. Following a roundtable on the history of the OGE18 and the presentation of the latest issue of our yearbook on representations of the 18th century in popular culture, Marko Demantowsky (Professor for Public History at the University of Vienna) delivered a keynote lecture on “Public History avant la lettre. August Ludwig Schlözers academic practice”. Moreover, new members and their current research projects were officially introduced. Entertainment was provided by Dominik Nostitz, who accompanied the event with pop songs on 18th century themes. During the event, donations were collected for travel grants for Ukrainian colleagues who will attend the ISECS Congress in Rome.

Prix/Awards :
Perhaps the most important task in the past year was dedicated to promoting outstanding work of early career scholars. In memory of Emperor Francis Stephen of Lorraine’s special role as patron to the sciences and the arts in ‚Austria‘, the OGE18 awarded the Franz-Stephan-Preis 2023 for excellent dissertations on the history and culture of the Habsburg Monarchy in the 18th century, further it awarded the Franz-Stephan-Förderungspreis 2023 for excellent MA-theses on a topic from the field of eighteenth-century studies presented at an Austrian university. Given the many submissions worthy of consideration, it was a great challenge to organize a reliable decision-making process with two reviews per submission, one internal and one external.

Activités internet/Web activities :
In order to convey hands-on knowledge about digital humanities research, the OGE18 is continuing its series of Digital Days, an open exchange format for DH-oriented projects on the (long) eighteenth century (https://oege18.org/?page_id=1890). Future events in Klagenfurt and Salzburg are being planned.

British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies
Publications :
The Journal for Eighteenth-Century Studies, published by Wiley, continues to publish four issues each year. At least one each year is a Special Issue on a particular theme, including ‘Writing Doctors and Writing Health in the Long Eighteenth Century’ (March 2023) and ‘Restoration Epistolarity’ (March 2024). The Journal has featured 26 reviews of scholarly publications in the past 12 months, covering books about Handel and Scarlatti, works on military and scientific history, a landmark exhibition and publication on the artist Giacomo Ceruti, and a study of the reception of Jonathan Swift's works in China, among much else. The journal's reviewers range from PhD students to emeritus professors and we especially pride ourselves on the editorial support we offer to contributors at an early career stage.

Criticks is the online Reviews Hub for BSECS, providing entertaining, informative and provocative reviews of events, exhibitions and media that are of interest to scholars of the eighteenth century. Over 20 reviews have been published over the past 12 months, covering engagements with the eighteenth century in Media, Music, Theatre and Fine and Decorative Arts. The eighteenth century has enjoyed plenty of exposure on the silver and small screens this year, as reflected in our reviews of Napoleon, Renegade Nell, Tom Jones, Our Flag Means Death and further installments in the Netflix Bridgerton Universe. On stage, we've seen and reviewed new adaptations of Northanger Abbey, The School for Scandal, The Welkin and The Divine Mrs S, whilst in the concert hall we've enjoyed the Handel Festival in Halle and a new production of 1772's At the Venice Fair (La Fiera di Venezia).
Congrès/Congresses :
The 53rd BSECS Annual Conference took place on 3-5 January 2024 at St Hugh’s College, Oxford. 152 papers were presented in 25 panels, 7 Roundtables, and 7 alternative-format sessions. A plenary lecture was given by the actor and writer Paterson Joseph, who also gave a live performance of ‘Sancho & Me’, a story connecting a Black life in the 18th-century transatlantic world with another in today’s UK, and based on his novel The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho. The conference concert featured Ensemble Hesperi, whose programme was inspired by research conducted by Mary-Jannet Leith who won the BSECS-Georgian Papers Fellowship in 2021. The Conference’s ‘Listening Event’ foregrounded members’ concerns were around conference accessibility, and the advantages of hybrid conferencing. Next year, the conference will move to Pembroke College, Oxford on 8-10 2025, a venue that will permit more online involvement.

In July 2023 the Society’s Postgraduate (PG) and Early Career Researcher (ECR) representatives organised a conference at the University of Edinburgh on the theme of ‘Erranty, Exile and Elsewhere’. The conference attracted 47 delegates and was held over two days with parallel sessions, workshops, and tours. This year, in August 2024, the PG/ECR conference will be held in Uppsala, Sweden, returning to the tradition of hosting an international PG/ECR conference every other year. The theme is ‘Communication and Exchange’ and we have speakers from both the UK and Sweden presenting their research.

Prix/Awards :
BSECS made awards of over £10,000 to scholars at all career stages, with a focus on postgraduate and early-career researchers. The Society contributed funds to joint prizes with the Bodleian Library, the Georgian Group, the Georgian Papers Project, the Birmingham Eighteenth-Century Centre, the Queen Mary Centre for Eighteenth-Century Studies, and the Society for Theatre Research. BSECS also provided financial support to events around the UK.

Website www.18e-eeuw.nl The board members of the Dutch-Belgian Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies noticed that the needs of (early-career) researchers have changed. In order to attract more early-career researchers and reach out to (non-academic) enthusiasts, the Society has started organizing more individual events and activities. To be more precise, an online lecture series is organized every year as well as a member event every six months. The Society has made efforts to improve its social media presence, in order to expand our reach and address new audiences. We have appointed one of our board members, Devin Vartija, as the Society’s social media manager, meaning that things are running more smoothly now. In the future, we intend to work together with Amsterdam University Press (AUP), so that our events gain traction and visibility.
