En bref

Le Certificat en anglais est conçu pour une clientèle qui souhaite augmenter ses compétences en anglais, autant en anglais oral qu'en anglais écrit. Pour ce faire, il comporte des cours visant à développer des habiletés à écouter, à lire, à parler et à écrire en anglais à l'aide d'un cheminement adapté au niveau de la compétence langagière de l'étudiant (intermédiaire ou avancé). Il prévoit, en outre, des activités portant sur des domaines spécifiques (ex. : Business English) et sur la culture anglophone dans son ensemble.

Les objectifs de ce programme à l’UQTR

Le programme s'adresse aux personnes qui, pour acquérir des informations ou pour influencer des décisions dans leur champ de spécialisation, sont appelées à communiquer avec des interlocuteurs anglophones ou à utiliser des documents rédigés exclusivement en anglais. Il peut en outre constituer une bonne préparation pour exercer les fonctions de moniteur d'anglais fonctionnel.

Base collégiale

Etre titulaire d'un diplôme d'études collégiales (DEC).

Base universitaire

Avoir réussi au moins 15 crédits de cours universitaires.

Base expérience

Posséder une connaissance appropriée de la langue anglaise orale et écrite.

Le responsable du programme pourra recommander au candidat adulte admissible des activités d'appoint susceptibles de l'aider dans la formation qu'il entreprend.

Les étudiants du niveau Intermediate désirant poursuivre au Baccalauréat en enseignement des langues secondes (7090) pourraient se voir reconnaître les cours suivants : ANG1029 Oral Communication, ANG1030 Advanced Writing, ANG1042 Language and Style, ANG1067 Practical Grammar I, ANG1068 Practical Grammar II et LNG1090 Grammaire différentielle.

Les étudiants du niveau Advanced désirant poursuivre au Baccalauréat en enseignement des langues secondes (7090) pourraient se voir reconnaître l'ensemble des cours du certificat.

Pour les fins d'émission d'un grade de bachelier par cumul de certificats, le secteur de rattachement de ce programme est " Arts ". Cours optionnels (30 crédits)

L'étudiant doit suivre les sept cours obligatoires suivants (vingt et un crédits) :
ANG1015 English in the Work Place
To provide students with the oral skills they need to function in a work environment. Intensive practice of English in a professional setting. Correction of mistakes. Practical review of grammar with an emphasis on interference errors. Written exercises. Enhancement of vocabulary. Job interviews. Telephone calls. Laboratory work as needed.

ANG1019 Everyday English I
To enable students to use English in everyday situations. Intensive practice of oral English in a communicative context. Building of self-confidence in English. Correction of mistakes. Practical review of grammar with an emphasis on verbs. Written exercises. Enhancement of vocabulary. Practice of pronunciation. Sketches.

ANG1029 Oral Communication
Improve oral proficiency in English. Instil confidence in students regarding their ability to express themselves in correct English. Active class discussions on a variety of topics and specific themes. Oral presentations (book reports, film reviews, etc.) and debates. Oral simulation of real life professional situations. The above-mentioned activities will be reinforced through written assignments.

ANG1067 Practical Grammar I
Review and strengthen students' knowledge of basic English grammar rules which are a source of problems for francophone students. The course will cover terminology pertaining to various aspects of grammar. Topics to be covered will include the following: nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs and auxiliaries, articles, pronouns and conjunctions. Emphasis will be placed on practical written and oral exercises.

ANG1077 Advanced English Grammar
Review and consolidation of grammatical structures in context using a discourse-based approach to improve understanding and use of English. Topics covered will include : tense and mood, sequence of tenses, relative clauses and adjective phrases, gerunds and infinitives, articles and other determiners, adverb clauses and phrases, as well as comprehension and writing assignments.

ANG1080 Listening
This course aims to improve listening skills by providing extensive practice in a wide range of contexts, including both general and more academic listening. Students will engage with a variety of authentic and adapted recordings in order to get accustomed to natural spoken English. Students will learn to listen strategically and effectively; they will also be supplied with background information and engage in pre- and post listening activities. Where appropriate, pronunciation and grammar will be addressed. At the end of the course, students will be better able to engage in independent listening involving registers of English ranging from colloquial to academic.

ANG1081 Reading
This course aims to improve reading skills by providing extensive practice in a range of text types, including both fiction and non-fiction. Students will engage with a variety of authentic texts (short stories, news articles, journal pieces) in order to get accustomed to written English of different styles and levels of formality. Students will learn to read strategically and effectively; they will also be supplied with background information and engage in pre- and post reading activities. Where appropriate, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and punctuation will be addressed. At the end of the course, students will be better able to engage in independent reading for information and pleasure.

ANG1017 English for Academic and Professional Purposes (ANG1015)
To enable students to participate indiscussions and to produce written expository prose texts pertaining to their field of academic and professional interests. Intensive practice of oral English in specialized fields. Study and production of different kinds of essays. Oral presentation and professional exchanges. Documenting and delivering papers. This course will be adapted to specific students' needs (i.e. Science, Health sciences, Computer Science...).

ANG1020 Written English for Business
To enable students to write formal letters, business correspondence and reports. Study and production of different types of business letters : i.e. request, information, order, acknowledgement, claim, adjustment and credit letters. Production of a C.V. and a covering letter. Study and production of memos.

ANG1045 Everyday English II (ANG1019)
To enable students to use oral English in most situations. Intensive practice of oral English in a communicative context. Development and improvement of speech strategies and skills. Correction of mistakes. Practical review of grammar with an emphasis on prepositions and conjunctions. Written exercises. Enhancement of vocabulary. Oral presentations.

ANG1078 Writing for Language Practitioners (ANG1077)
To improve written English proficiency by exploring writing strategies and enhancing skills in several areas: grammar and writing in context, critical reading, writing and rewriting. This course will involve reading, analysis and production of various types of texts. It will entail examination of writing strategies, stylistic features and text content, error analysis as well summarizing, paraphrasing and text revision.

Pour compléter sa formation, l'étudiant choisit de zéro à un cours parmi la liste des cours suivants (0 à 3 crédits) :
ANG1042 Language and Style (ANG1030)
To introduce students to various stylistic and rhetorical devices used in different communicative situations. Focus on both process and product in approaching text comprehension and production. Study of a variety of discourses and language registers, both oral and written, formal and informal used for different purposes (interviews, casual texts, specialized texts, editorials, literary excerpts, etc). Related exercises to enable students to present their ideas cogently and coherently.

LNG1100 Grammaire et stylistique différentielles (ANG1077)
Sensibiliser l'étudiant aux différences et aux ressemblances entre l'anglais et le français, lui faire résoudre des difficultés de traduction qui résultent du non-parallélisme des deux systèmes linguistiques, lui permettre d'améliorer sa capacité de traduction. Étude comparée des caractéristiques grammaticales et stylistiques de l'anglais et du français permettant d'identifier, afin de les éviter, les confusions qui résultent des divergences entre les deux langues. Explications théoriques et exercices d'application portant sur divers aspects de la langue : aspects lexicaux, grammaticaux et stylistiques.

L'étudiant doit suivre les quatre cours obligatoires du niveau suivants (douze crédits) :
ANG1077 Advanced English Grammar

ANG1031 Canadian and American Cultures
Introduce student to various expressions of English language cultures in Canada and the United States. Analyse the implications of cultural expressions for language teaching/learning. Analysis of various expressions of English language culture in Canada and the United States as it is expressed, for instance, in films, videos, television, songs. Implications of these for language teaching/learning.

ANG1042 Language and Style (ANG1030)
To introduce students to various stylistic and rhetorical devices used in different communicative situations. Focus on both process and product in approaching text comprehension and production. Study of a variety of discourses and language registers, both oral and written, formal and informal used for different purposes (interviews, casual texts, specialized texts, editorials, literary excerpts, etc). Related exercises to enable students to present their ideas cogently and coherently.

ANG1043 Cinema and English Culture
To introduce the student to films of renown or of particular impact or influence in the English-speaking world (Canadian, American and Commonwealth), as well as to explore the social, political, and ideological contexts presented in these films. Examination of the manner in which films both reflect anglophone culture and contribute to its development. Summary view of theoreticians who have greatly influenced film studies (Saussure, Frankfurt School, Freud). Exploration and analysis of the following topics: genre theory; women's vs men's film discourse; horror, science-fiction, fantasy; film noir, gaze theory, "starmaker" systems; apparatus theory.

ANG1066 Popular Culture
Aim : To make students aware of the manner in which popular culture develops thanks to the influence of history, sociological factors, the media such as newspapers, music, movies and television, and sport. Content : a) A brief historical survey of the development of the institutions of government, education and law which form the foundation of the society in which a popular culture has developed; b) An examination of the role played in our daily lives by newspapers, songs, radio, television and films; c) An examination of the history of sport and its role in popular culture; d) An account of the manner in which popular media and sport both reflect anglophone culture and contribute to its development; e) A comparative account of how popular cultures differ in anglophone countries; f) A look at the future with particular emphasis on the Internet, its possible domination by the English language and its influence on popular culture.

LIA1029 Survey of English Literature
Introduce student to major literary works in English. Explore the social, political and ideological contexts presented in the texts. Major literary movements in English language. Study of texts from key authors of different periods : Anglo-Saxon and Middle-English, Renaissance, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, romanticism and victorianism, twentieth century. Analysis of social, political and ideological transformations presented by these texts.

ANG1079 English Internship in Intercultural Communication
Le cours English Internship in Intercultural Communication vise à développer la compétence interculturelle à la base de la communication et de la compréhension entre les individus en contexte d'interculturalité. Mettant l'accent sur les parallèles et divergences interculturels, chaque édition du cours privilégiera un contexte culturel spécifique pour l'expérience de l'altérité et de la communication interculturelle. Lors d'un séjour de trois semaines dans le pays retenu, les étudiants développeront leur conscience interculturelle à travers des expériences d'enrichissement mutuel dans diverses situations, notamment éducative (universitaire ou scolaire), professionnelle (entrepreneuriale ou industrielle) ou autre (événements culturels et sociaux ou jumelage d'étudiants). Adoptant une approche multidisciplinaire et incluant la conscience de l'altérité et la sensibilité à la différence, le cours prend appui sur les apports de la sociopragmatique et des stratégies de communication pour soutenir le développement de la compétence interculturelle. Des séminaires et des ateliers permettront aux étudiants de se préparer et de réfléchir aux échanges et expériences d'interculturalité proposés. Reconnaissant l'importance de l'anglais comme langue internationale au service de la communication interculturelle, les séminaires et les activités seront dispensés en anglais. Durée du cours et calendrier : Ce cours de 3 crédits s'étalera sur une période de 8 semaines, pendant la session d'été (dates à confirmer). Le cours sera distribué sur les activités suivantes :
  • des séminaires préparatoires à l'UQTR, Québec, Canada;
  • des ateliers, des séminaires et des expériences sur le terrain, sur une période de 3 semaines à l'université d'accueil;
  • un séminaire de clôture à l'UQTR, Québec, Canada.


LIA1032 Young People's Literature and Theatre
This course will use a bipartite approach to introduce students to young people's literature and performance-based theatre, and to provide them with an overview of great plays. Students will be initiated to both classic and popular works of children's and/or young people's literature, ranging from pieces for the very young, to novels intended for a young teenage audience. Their drama analysis and appreciation skills will be developed through an overview of great plays. They will also examine the place of literature in the classroom.
