The team

The Chair's research team is composed of Quebec and international students. Several trainees also join the team during the year. The projects as well as the responsible student, are listed below.

PhDPhD

Mohammad Reza Effatparvar
Thesis title : Dertermination of lumbar spine kinematics by musculoskelettal ultrasound
Supervisor : Pr Sobczak

Mohammad earned his Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering in 2014, followed by his Master's degree in 2016, both in Iran, where his passion for orthopedic biomechanics began to flourish. He embarked on his career as a biomedical engineer, fulfilling roles as a surgery technician and engineer, specializing in Ilizarov surgeries. During this time, he actively participated in over a thousand procedures. To stay engaged in research, he collaborated with the Russian Ilizarov Center, further enhancing his expertise. After dedicating several years to this field, he made the decision to pursue a Ph.D. to strengthen his career. Currently, he is actively working towards his Ph.D. at UQTR.

Jean-Luc Gauthier, DC, MSc
Supervisor : Stéphane Sobczak

After graduating from the Doctor of Chiropractic program at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières in 2004, Jean-Luc decided to deepen his knowledge of the human body by completing a master's degree in motor learning and biomechanics.
Since 2011, he has been teaching at UQTR in the fields of biomechanics, pathomechanics and rehabilitation. He has also been a guest lecturer on various occasions in Quebec and Africa.
Entering his 20th year of clinical practice, Jean-Luc decided to pursue his academic path by starting his PhD in biomedical sciences, the subject of which is the study of myofascial chains and their impact on functional rehabilitation.

Sabrina Gloux
Thesis title : Entheseal bone mechanical and material properties with age : Ontogeny of entheseal plasticity at different structural levels in CD-1 mice
Supervisor : Stéphane Sobczak
Co-supervisor : Gilles Bronchti

Sabrina Gloux holds a degree in Anthropology from the Université de Montréal. She specializes in human osteology, bioarchaeology and functional anatomy. Her research interests include skeletal adaptation to mechanical loads, reconstruction of past activities, human evolution, forensic anthropology, violence and conflict, and human rights. Sabrina holds certifications in ancient DNA analysis from the Paleo-DNA Lab at Lakehead University (ON), and in forensic medicine and crime scene analysis from the Institut des Hautes Études en Criminologie in Paris (France). Sabrina also trained in museology, with an emphasis on the acquisition, conservation and display of human remains. As part of her doctoral studies in Biomedical Sciences, Sabrina is working on an animal model to better understand the biology of enthesis and how it responds to mechanical loads, with the aim of improving our knowledge in this field and making better use of it in archaeological contexts.

Mirka Normand
Thesis title : Pathomechanical Factors associated with Trapeziometacarpal Joint Arthritis - Clinical Classification of Trapeziometacarpal Joint Arthritis: External Influences on Disease
Supervisor : Pr Sobczak
Co-supervisor : Pr Brismée (Texas Tech University Health Science Center)

Ms. Normand graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from Laval University in Québec, Canada. She completed her Advanced Master’s degree with hand therapy emphasis in 2003 at Texas Woman’s University in Houston.  She was certified as an orthopedic manual therapist through The International Academy of Orthopedic Medicine-US (IAOM-US) in 2006, and soon after joined their faculty for the creation and teaching of a the Hand and Upper Extremity Track. Ms. Normand currently works as certified hand therapist for Yale New Haven Health Systems, Pequot Health Center, in Groton, Connecticut.

ScD (TTUHSC)Doctor of Science in Physical Therapy (ScD)

Thomas Noel
Thesis title : Effects of gleno-humeral inferior and posterior humeral glide mobilizations on coracohumeral ligament strain : A cadaveric investigation
Supervisor : Pr. Sobczak
Co-supervisor : Pr. Brismée (TTUHSC)

Maîtrise en scienceMaster

Félix-Antoine Lavoie
Thesis title : Peripheral mechanical effects of neurodynamic mobilizations of the superficial fibular nerve
Supervisor : Pr. Sobczak

Mr. Lavoie graduated from the Cégep Garneau's Physical Rehabilitation Techniques program in 2017. After 1 year of clinical practice, he began a bachelor's degree in kinesiology which he completed in the spring of 2021. He quickly developed an interest in research in musculoskeletal anatomy applied to clinical practice. In 2020, he will start a project under the supervision of Prof. Sobczak on the mechanical aspects of neurodynamic mobilizations in manual therapy. In continuity with his project, he will start a master's degree in biomedical sciences within the research chair in functional anatomy in the summer of 2022 while assisting in the chair's projects. Mr. Lavoie is currently completing his Diploma of Specialized Studies in Athletic Therapy at UQTR.
