Art and Humanities

Humans have always had a strong relationship with death. Throughout history and across cultures, mankind's curiosity, fear and understanding of death has been depicted through religion, architecture, landscapes, artwork and literature. It is through these manifestations that historians, sociologists and philosophers can explore society's changing perception and sentiment towards death, decay and the human cadaver.

REST[ES] provides a unique opportunity for experts in the humanities and visual arts to explore Quebec society's past, present and future attitudes and perceptions towards death.

One fundamental topic that will be examined is whole body donation, particularly due to the important role donors play in the studies and trainings conducted at REST[ES]. Donor motives, demographics and ethics will be analyzed from a philosophical, sociological and anthropological perspective. The arts and humanities will provide a conduit for public dialogue and allow for a better understanding of modern societal values towards death. This will ultimately aid in maintaining respectful and ethical practices at REST[ES].
