Program

In addition to round tables and visual presentations, a participatory formula has been provided by a the programming which will be composed of :

  • two workshops that will allow participants to give their point of view and to discuss in groups different topics related to youth rights and homelessness prevention;
  • A room that will allow you to put forward your ideas for the co-construction of a common declaration that will be unveiled on Friday, November 19!

All programming is based onwill be presented around the 5 main focus areas:

  • Identities and Trajectories
  • Social Ties
  • Personal Growth and Development
  • Living Conditions
  • Health and Social Services

Each theme will be broken down into two sessions :

  • Youth homelessness prevention recommendations
  • Concrete actions to prevent youth homelessness

Participants will be able to choose the same theme for all two workshops or change themes.


Themes and workshops description

THEME 1. IDENTITIES AND TRAJECTORIES

This theme deals with issues related to the diversity of identities and trajectories among young people. The plurality of life courses encourages recognition of the right to equality and non-discrimination for all youth, regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnic and cultural origin, or mental and physical health situation. With a view toward preventing youth homelessness, this theme emphasizes the importance of breaking down the prejudices, stigmatization, and discrimination experienced by youth in order to instead highlight and celebrate the diversity of their realities.

  • Workshop 1.1: Right to Equality and Non-Discrimination - Cultural and Social
    This workshop will focus on combating stigma and discrimination among youth based on racism, colonialism, capacity building, and social profiling.

  • Workshop 1.2: Right to Equality and Non-Discrimination - Gender and Sexual Orientation
    This workshop will focus on combating stigma and discrimination among youth based on sexual orientation, sexism, heterosexism, and cisgenderism.

THEME 2. SOCIAL TIES

By focusing on social ties and natural supports, this theme addresses the place that young people occupy in society. While acknowledging the importance of a youth’s roots in a community, social ties also raise questions about social cohabitation, judicialization, and the occupation of public space as a place of belonging and socialization. In this area, the prevention of youth homelessness refers to the recognition of the right to cohabitation and to justice, as well as the right to citizenship and socialization.

  • Workshop 2.1: Right to social cohabitation and access to justice
    This workshop will focus on issues related to social cohabitation, judicialization, social profiling, and access to justice for youth.

  • Workshop 2.2: Right to socialization and the right to citizenship
    This workshop will focus on issues related to freedom of assembly, socialization among marginalized population, and the recognition of young people as full citizens in society.

THEME 3. PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

Based on the notions of self-fulfillment and personal development, this theme offers a framework for reflection on the youth’s acquisition of personal and social skills. The place and role of education and socio-professional integration are crucial issues in.

  • Workshop 3.1: Right to education and socio-professional integration
    This workshop will focus on issues related to the flexibility, diversity, and accessibility of education and socio-professional integration practices for young people.

  • Workshop 3.2: Right to self-determination and information
    This workshop will focus on issues related to empowerment, freedom of expression, the search for meaning, and the recognition of the rhythm of each individual youth in their personal and social emancipation.

THEME 4. LIVING CONDITIONS

This theme focuses on the living conditions that mark and frame the life paths of young people. Systemic constraints related to socio-economic precariousness, food insecurity, residential instability, different forms of violence, and the lack of a healthy living.

  • Workshop 4.1: Right to housing and a healthy and safe environment
    This workshop will address issues related to housing accessibility and availability, as well as land use planning to create healthy, safe and healthy spaces, free of violence, with the goal of preventing youth homelessness.

  • Workshop 4.2: Right to food and the right to a liveable income
    This workshop will address issues related to food security, access to a liveable income, and redistribution of wealth as means to help prevent youth homelessness.

THEME 5. HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES

This theme addresses how the health and social services systems work to prevent youth homelessness. Mental health, physical health, and substance dependency issues are common pathways into youth homelessness. In order to improve youth health, it is important to rethink institutional services and transitions, including youth protection services, while taking into account the pace and multiple realities of youth experiencing homelessness. Within this theme, youth homelessness prevention refers to the recognition of the right to access and adapted mental and physical health services, as well as social services and youth protection services.

  • Workshop 5.1: Right to accessible and adapted mental and physical health services
    This workshop will focus on issues related to the accessibility and adaptation of mental and physical health services to meet the youth’s specific needs and multiple life trajectories.

  • Workshop 5.2: Right to access to social services and adapted and accessible youth protection services
    This workshop will focus on issues related to the accessibility and adaptation of social and youth protection services to meet the specific needs and plurality of life trajectories of young people.
