Teaching Statement in Brief

I summarize here after teaching beliefs I have developed through my teaching experience:

  • Link between teaching and research. I believe that effective teaching should integrate state-of-the-art research, i.e. the results of recent research should be used to update courses content. This is particularly true in the Information Technology (IT) field which is constantly evolving. I always try to refresh the content of my teaching with recent results from my research and from research of colleagues.

  • Adaptation of teaching to targeted classes. My teaching carrier has put me in a variety of teaching environments and I have acquired better teaching skills in working with students not only coming from a variety of social, economic and ethnic backgrounds, but also displaying varying levels of work experience, interest in the subject matter and ability for learning. I thus think that adapting teaching to the class without compromising high quality standards is a key to effective learning.

  • Students empowerment, Interactive classes, Links with business reality. My behaviour as a teacher has also been shaped by my experience as a student. As such, I appreciated teachers who empowered students, interactive classes, courses in which relevant links with business news were made, and an appropriate dosage of theory and practice. As teacher, I always make it clear that students will play a prominent role in their learning, I try to create an atmosphere that allows them to actively participate by interacting with me and among themselves, and I encourage them to develop critical and independent thinking by challenging theories and confronting them to their actual work experience. I also constantly scrutinize business and technological news in order to identify recent developments to illustrate topics covered in class, and I usually resort to case studies either to introduce main ideas or to give students a glimpse of the application of theories from a practical point of view.
