GRIN – Research and Intervention Group for Vulnerable and Neglected Children
About
Founded in 1993, the Research and Intervention Group for Vulnerable and Neglected Children (GRIN) is recognized as a leader in partnership research on child neglect and protection in Quebec and internationally. Its mission is to better understand the causes and consequences of vulnerability and neglect, and to develop effective interventions that support children and families.
Research
Research Axes
1. Etiology and manifestations of vulnerability and neglect.
- Describe the psychosocial mechanisms underlying the production and intergenerational transmission of risk associated with child neglect/abuse among children, mothers, and fathers.
- Deepen the understanding of vulnerability factors (contextual/extrafamilial) and protective factors related to the parent–child relationship that contribute to, or interfere with, the adequate response to children’s needs.
2. Consequences of vulnerability and neglect on children and adults.
- Deepen the understanding of the impact of situations of vulnerability and neglect on the developmental trajectories of individuals and families.
- Identify the factors that mitigate the impact of vulnerability and neglect and that account for resilience processes in individuals and families.
3. Development and evaluation of professional practices that support vulnerable families.
- Deepen a conceptual framework of practice by considering: (a) the intersectoral nature of social action in this field, (b) the sharing of responsibilities between parents/families and service institutions, and (c) the perspectives of children and parents.
- Analyze and evaluate, within this framework, current practices in promotion, prevention, and intervention with children and families in contexts of vulnerability.
- Develop (a) innovative initiatives in social policies and programs for children and families, and (b) mechanisms and tools for knowledge uptake to support the implementation of these innovative programs in relevant practice settings.
