This course aims at familiarizing students with the nature of language acquisition.
The focus will be shared between first language acquisition and second language acquisition (SLA). Students will understand the influence of first language acquisition on the development of SLA theories. Particular emphasis will be put on the relation between these theories and on their relevance to classroom teaching. This will entail the study of the following : a) the concepts of competence and performance; b) the difference between acquisition and learning; c) developmental stages in acquisition; d) the influence of psychological and sociological factors on acquisition; e) the relationship between research findings and teaching practice.
